Leviathan versus the Constitution: 2 Semesters. (This course will also be taught to Highschool students under the title Honors History & Writing. see next course.

Location: Madison

Audience: Adults.

Fee: $50/semester

Description: Freedom requires vigilance. This course will help each student understand the ideological forces at work in the destruction of our freedoms and will present options for restoring them.

This a study of the conflict between Hamilton’s and Jefferson’s views of the Constitution from the founding of the nation to the present.

Hamilton wanted a strong central government with as much power as possible centered in the chief executive whereas Jefferson fought for a strict construction of the Constitution that would preserve individual liberties.

Prerequisite: Familiarity with the Constitution and the Bill of Rights would be helpful as well as a basic understanding of Economics though a basic review of the Constitution and economics will be included in the class.

An excellent primer for Economics is Thomas Sowell’s Basic Economics. Though quite long at 650 pages, it is very readable with no charts, graphs, or equations. Henry Hazlitt’s Economics in One Lesson is a much shorter introduction suitable for adults.

Text: TBA

NOTE: You must register for this course directly with the instructor. 256-325-1500, Cell 256-655-7295.

Kathy Bond & Larry Bond |256-325-1500| larry.bond@knology.net , kmbond@knology.net |

Honors History & Writing: 9:00-12:00 2 Semesters. 1 credit/semester

Location: Madison

Audience: Advanced Highschoolers

Prerequisites: Students should have completed American History or be taking it concurrently. Familiarity with the Constitution and the Bill of Rights would be helpful as well as a basic understanding of Economics, though a basic review of the Constitution and economics will be included in the class.

An excellent primer for Economics is Thomas Sowell’s Basic Economics. Though quite long at 650 pages, it is very readable (the easiest and clearest explanation I’ve found for high school students). Reading this book and answering the questions would qualify the student for the required ½ credit of high school economics (call me for more on this).

Fee: $225/semester.

Description: Same course as Leviathan versus the Constitution mentioned above for adults but it is combined with essay and research writing component. It is a study of the conflict between Alexander Hamilton’s and Thomas Jefferson’s views of the Constitution from the founding of the nation to the present. Hamilton wanted a strong central government with as much power as possible centered in the chief executive whereas Jefferson fought for a strict construction of the Constitution that would preserve individual liberties.

Freedom requires vigilance. This course will help each student understand the ideological forces at work in the destruction of our freedoms and will present options for restoring them. This course is highly recommended for advanced college-bound students.

By the end of the year, your child will have explored perspective and point of view, they will have written a Letter to the Editor, a book review, a news report, timed essays that will prepare them for the writing portion of the SATs, biographies, and compare/contrast essay to name a few. The final two months of the year will be dedicated to step-by-step instructions for writing a MLA-style research paper.

Write Time is open to students in grades six through twelve. Grading will be based on the student’s ability and experience and will vary accordingly. Students should expect between three to five hours of homework per week.
